A few compromises to consider while being a housesitter in Hawaii

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our time petsitting in Hawaii, both in Hilo (on the Big Island, also known as ‘The Island of Hawaii’) and just north of Honolulu in Mililani on the Island of Oahu.

  • Nearly everything is shipped into Hawaii from the mainland, accounting for around 90% of goods sold. This means that prices here are higher than almost anywhere else in the United States, so budget a bit higher for gas and grocery costs. Plan to eat local produce in season for the freshest and most economical groceries.
  • Most locals don’t have air conditioning. Be sure to ask the homeowner about whether they have air conditioning before accepting a housesitting opportunity in Hawaii, if it’s important to you. Each island has some variation in temperature, breeze, and humidity, and every house is unique.
  • Many Hawaii homeowners will have property that needs to be maintained, which may be as simple as cutting the grass every week or as involved as tending to a large garden outside in the heat and humidity. Be sure to clarify expectations before accepting a house sit.
  • Public transportation is less frequent and not always convenient, so a bus that is “just down the road” might be a 40-minute walk away, or a free bus to get around the island might only run three times a day. Learn about public transportation options or consider renting a car and factor that into your budget.
  • Hawaii is a series of volcanoes, and much of its coastline features sharp, jagged rock and cliffs. When you think of Hawaii, you might imagine resorts with sandy beaches, and while those are available in Waikiki, on Oahu, for instance, the majority of the coastlines have jagged rock or low tide pools. These areas are great for wading in the shallow water, swimming, and snorkelling in the clear water. But do some research on beaches in the area you’ll be housesitting if you’re hoping to dig your feet into the sand and relax on a beach towel.

Our first housesit was just outside of Hilo, Hawaii, a 5-minute drive from the east coast in the Big Island, where 30-foot cliffs line the shore – beautiful, but not ideal for building sand castles or getting ankle-deep in the ocean at sunset.

Our coastline while housesitting in Hilo was rocky and unique

The coastline near our Big Island housesit in Hilo was rocky and really unique

Our second housesit was in Mililani (northwest of Honolulu), which was in the middle of the island.

We could easily drive in different directions to each coast for an assortment of beaches, from calm, shallow snorkelling to the sandy resort beaches of Waikiki. With Oahu being such a popular and densely populated island, it meant that a day trip to a beach included spending a fair bit of time finding parking.

Ask lots of questions and be sure that the housesitting opportunity in Hawaii is a good fit for you and your family before agreeing. There’s no point in struggling through not having A/C for the sake of “being in Hawaii” if you won’t be comfortable during your stay and in the best spirits to be petsitting in Hawaii.

Here’s our guide to finding the right housesit (aka getting level headed about if it’s a fit for you, not just getting excited about the possibility of free accomodation in Hawaii!)

House Sitting in Honolulu

House sitting in Honolulu offers the perfect blend of urban excitement and natural beauty.

This bustling city on the island of Oahu is renowned for its beautiful beaches and cultural attractions. As a house sitter in Honolulu, you’ll have easy access to iconic spots like Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head, where you can spend your days soaking up the sun or hiking to breathtaking viewpoints.

You’ll also be close to Pearl Harbour, where you can learn more about the events that took place during the start of WWII and visit the USS Arizona Memorial.

In addition to the natural beauty, Honolulu is a great place rich in cultural sites that enhance the house sitting experience at night. From the historic Iolani Palace to the vibrant arts scene in Chinatown, there’s always something new to discover.

Pet-friendly parks and beaches provide additional recreational opportunities for both house sitters and their furry companions, making it a fun, well-rounded pet sitting experience for animal lovers.

Exploring Kauai Through House Sitting

Kauai, often referred to as the “Garden Isle,” captivates house sitters with its serene beauty and lush landscapes. Even though we have not yet visited this island, we have been told that it is a haven for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. House sitters will have the opportunity to explore the rich natural attractions of Kauai, from the dramatic cliffs of the Na Pali Coast to the tranquil shores of Hanalei Bay.

We didn’t make it to Kauai, Lanai, or Maui on this trip, but they’re not ALL officially on our bucket list.

If you have the opportunity to housesit on Kauai, be sure to spend time immersing yourself in the local culture. Engaging in cultural festivals and community events can enrich your stay, fostering connections with the local community and providing a deeper understanding of Hawaiian traditions and culture.

House sitting on Kauai, on a slice of paradise, offers a chance to unwind, relax, and contribute to the local way of life in Hawaii.

Securing your first house sit involves clear communication with homeowners and showcasing what makes you a great sitter.

Here’s a quick guide to get you started on your house sitting adventure in Hawaii.

Joining Trusted House Sitting Platforms

Joining a trusted house-sitting platform is our first recommendation for becoming a successful house sitter. While you can probably find community groups on Facebook, Trusted Housesitters allows you to have the confidence of a verified identity and reliable support if something isn’t exactly as you’d hoped. Save 25% on your membership with this link.

Unlike housesitting in other parts of the United States, you can’t easily rent a car and drive to a friend or family member’s house in a nearby state if the housesit in Hawaii isn’t as described. Trusted Housesitters has great insurance options in the case that something goes wrong as part of their premium membership. We’ve highlighted the Trusted Housesitters membership tier benefits here, but since we travel full-time, we’ve opted to choose the premium tier.

Trusted Housesitters is one of the most popular platforms that facilitates house sitting in Hawaii. Sign up and create a profile that highlights your skills and experience. And, most importantly, a love for animals is crucial, as most house-sitting arrangements include pet care.

With house sitting arrangements, no money is exchanged; it’s a mutual trade of services. Homeowners offer free accommodation in exchange for the care of their pets and property. This arrangement benefits both parties and provides an affordable way to travel and experience new places while minimizing spending.

Homeowners do not have to pay for a kennel, making it an attractive option for not having to pay kennel fees while their pets ahve the benefit of staying in their own home while the home owner is away.

Creating an Impressive House Sitter Profile

An impressive house sitter profile is a very important aspect of securing a house sit in Hawaii. Many house-sitting platforms require sitters to create detailed profiles, including clear photographs and honest representations of their skills and experience. Highlighting your experience with pets and relevant personal attributes that appeal to homeowners is crucial.

As a family, we show off plenty of photos of our boys interacting with pets so that the homeowners see that our family is comfortable with animals of all sizes (and energy levels). Now that we’ve completed dozens of petsits, our Trusted housesitter reviews speak for themselves, but starting out, we wanted home owners to see that our kids were comfortable with pets.

Ensure your profile highlights prior pet care experience and any relevant skills to stand out from other house sitters. A strong pet sitter profile can increase your chances of being selected by homeowners looking for reliable, trustworthy, and caring sitters.

Here’s a full guide for maximizing your housesitting profile.

Securing Your First House Sit in Hawaii

Securing your first house sit can be challenging, but with the right approach, it becomes much easier. Membership on trusted house-sitting platforms requires an annual fee, which covers access to various house-sitting opportunities. This investment is well worth it, as it opens up a world of possibilities for affordable travel. (Plus you can save 25% on your membership as a thank you for reading our blog!)

Many house sitters receive free use of amenities such as internet, kitchens, and sometimes even bicycles or personal vehicles for local travel.

Clear communication with homeowners is essential to secure your first house sit. Make sure to discuss your responsibilities thoroughly and showcase why you’re the ideal fit for their needs. It’s also good to have some flexibility in your travel dates if a homeowner would like you to be in the area before the sit starts to meet them in person and be introduced to the pets you’ll be caring for.

Be sure you’re not just trying to say the right things to secure the housesit. You need to be sure it’s a good fit for you (and your family) before agreeing.

What to Expect When House Sitting in Hawaii

House sitting in Hawaii offers a unique blend of responsibilities and leisure. Establishing clear expectations with the homeowner can prevent misunderstandings during the house sitting period. It’s important to discuss specific pet care routines and household responsibilities to ensure continuity and avoid any surprises. We suggest that you schedule a video chat with the homeowner before you arrive in order to see the pet you’ll be caring for, see a bit of the home you’ll be staying in, and ask any questions you might have.

In the following sections, we’ll explore the main aspects of what to expect when house sitting in Hawaii, including taking care of pets, maintaining the property, and enjoying local life. Understanding these elements will better prepare you for a successful and enjoyable house sitting experience.

Taking Care of Pets

Taking care of pets is often the primary responsibility of house sitters in Hawaii:

  • The happiness and safety of the animals are the most important aspects.
  • You might take care of a dog, a cat, and even chickens, and having experience with different kinds of animals is helpful.
  • Keeping up with the pet’s daily routine helps them adjust to new sitters more quickly.

Treats and engaging playtime will help you quickly bond with pets and will help ease any anxiety they might have during the transition of the pet owner leaving and you arriving. We always encourage our kids to play with the pets right away to strengthen their bond with the pets and ensure a positive experience as the pets get comfortable with our family in their home.

Maintaining the Property

Maintaining the property is another key aspect of house sitting. Many homeowners expect their sitters to handle basic tasks like watering plants and ensuring the cleanliness of the house. The responsibilities can range from simple maintenance to more involved tasks, depending on the type of property that is maintained. Be prepared to have these responsibilities outside of the care of the pets.

Regular cleaning tasks may include dusting, vacuuming, and ensuring that the home is tidy. Some homeowners expect house sitters to maintain swimming pools or hot tubs. Being responsible for outdoor upkeep, such as lawn care and garden maintenance, is also common, so be prepared for instructions about these things from the homeowners and set time aside to complete these tasks.

Ask about expectations for the property during your initial video call before you agree to traveling to the house sit.

Enjoying Local Life

House sitting in Hawaii isn’t just about responsibilities; it’s also about enjoying living like a local. House sitters are encouraged to immerse themselves in local culture, which can include trying local cuisine and engaging in community events. Fostering connections with local communities while house sitting in the Hawaiian Islands enriches the overall experience.

Discover hidden gems by exploring less-touristy locations. Scenic hiking trails in Hawaii provide house sitters with opportunities for outdoor exploration and amazing views to walk.

Immerse yourself in local life, local events, and meet the locals to create unforgettable memories and truly experience Hawaii outside of the Waikiki resorts.

House sitting promotes a minimalist lifestyle with cost efficiency, comfort while travelling, animal interaction, and meaningful activities. Next, you’ll find some tips on communicating with homeowners, packing essentials, and building relationships with furry friends to ensure a successful house sitting experience.

.

Communicating with Homeowners

Effective communication with homeowners can significantly influence their decision to choose a particular sitter. Establishing clear and regular communication is essential for a positive house sitting experience. When applying for your first house sit, send a personalized message explaining why you’re an ideal fit for caring for their pets and home.

Testimonials or references from previous experiences can enhance your profile’s credibility and attract more interested homeowners through a search. Trust between sitters and homeowners is crucial for a positive owner arrangement for each family member involved, showcasing the ability to foster strong relationships.

Establish a detailed list of responsibilities to maintain focus and avoid misunderstandings. Trusted Housesitters offers homeowners space on their platforms to include information about the care of their home and pets that can be easily shared with pet sitters for review before a housesit begins.

Packing Essentials for House Sitting

Pack light and include essential items; many house sitters manage with just a backpack or carry-on suitcase. Important items to bring include:

  • Items suited for outdoor activities, such as hiking gear, are needed to enjoy Hawaii’s natural beauty
  • Clothing – including swimsuits, clothing for warm days, and a jacket for cool evenings if you travel up the mountains or volcanoes
  • Toiletries (it shouldn’t be expected that these are provided by the homeowner)

Packing smartly ensures you’re well-prepared for both your pet sitting responsibilities and the adventures you’ll embark on during your travels to housesit. This not only makes your travel more convenient and comfortable, but also helps you fully enjoy the experience. Our family prefers to pack light and not have baggage that needs to be checked at the airports when we fly.

It is easier for us, being a family of 5, to travel with as little as possible so that we can enjoy the experiences we have while petsitting without being responsible for keeping track of a lot of personal belongings.

Here’s our recommendation for the best airplane luggage for kids.

Building Relationships with Furry Friends

One of the biggest perks of caring for animals while pet sitting is receiving a lot of love and companionship from the pets. Activities like exploring trails with dogs or admiring views with cats can enhance your bond with them. Building a bond with pets quickly is crucial for making them feel comfortable and secure during your stay.

Quickly establishing a relationship with furry friends not only leads to a happier stay for you but also helps the pets feel safe and loved in your care, making you a trusted, sweet friend. These relationships enrich your house sitting experience, providing both emotional rewards and unforgettable memories.
