The Granite Luxury Hotel in George Town, Penang, was a great starting point for our visit. Penang is a state in northwest Malaysia, comprising a section of the mainland (Butterworth is the largest city) and the island of Penang, whose largest city is George Town.
We stayed for two nights at the Granite, and it was a great spot to get the lay of the land, enjoy some local food, and hear from locals what we should see and what tourist traps are worth skipping in George Town.

Quick overview of The Granite Luxury Hotel Penang
We stayed one night in the Safari Suite and one night in the Diva Suite, giving us a solid look at what the Granite Luxury Hotel Penang offers for families. The hotel sits in central George Town, steps from KOMTAR (Home of “the Top, Penang, and the tallest tower in Penang at 68 stories) and walkable to many major attractions.
The Granite Luxury Hotel is two interconnected buildings, with a total of 52 rooms and 100 suites. That’s a mix of themed options (like the Safari and Diva we enjoyed) and plenty of non-themed accommodation options for families who want stylized comfort without the gimmicks.
Quick facts about The Granite Luxury Hotel
- Location: 191A Jalan Magazine, George Town, Penang Island
- Room Count: 52 single/double rooms + 100 suites
- Best for: families with kids, couples on romantic escapes, business travelers
- Standout features: themed suites, infinity pool with city views, the tallest automated hotel car park in Malaysia
- Check in: 3:00 PM | Check out: 11:00 AM
- Specialty suites are one-off suites, so if you’re hoping for something specific, book your room at the Granite as soon as you know when you’ll be visiting.
Hotel facts & key features
The granite luxury hotel sits in the heart of historic George Town, about a 5-minute walk from KOMTAR Tower (home of the Rainbow Skywalk, one of the iconic attractions at “The Top”). The property features a modern style with decorative touches throughout.
The hotel’s automated parking garage holds a Malaysia Book of Records title for being the tallest automated hotel car park. If you’re driving in with a rental car, you’ll drive it into a car elevator and get out so the elevator can lift your car and stack it — a novel experience that saves space in the tight George Town city center.
We were getting around with Grab, but we did stick around long enough to see a car being hailed and delivered with the elevator-like system to the ground floor.
We loved the Mirage Pool Deck with Infinity Pool
The infinity pool sits on level 13 with an acrylic glass platform section where you can swim while looking 13 floors down at the street below. It also holds a Malaysia Book of Records achievement for the highest cantilevered acrylic-bottom swimming pool.
The Granite’s on-site amenities:
- Infinity swimming pool with glass platform and skyline views
- Fitness center for maintaining your daily exercise routine
- Business suites and meeting rooms for small meetings or work assignments
- Rooftop bar with panoramic views
- 24-hour front desk with friendly staff
- Free WiFi throughout
- Note that they don’t have a restaurant on site, but there are plenty of walking options (local restaurants, markets, and a food court at a shopping mall), and a morning shuttle that stops at 6 locations through the city for breakfast
Our stay as a family of 5 at The Granite Luxury Hotel in Penang
We chose The Granite as our base for arriving in Penang because we wanted a central location within walking distance of food, shopping, and attractions. The themed suites caught our attention for giving the kids something memorable, and they soaked in every minute.
We visited in February 2026 for a 2-night stay. Our family of five includes three boys, so we needed space and flexibility. The Safari suite was only available for one of our two nights, so we made a switch to the Diva suite on the same floor for our second night.
Check-in was smooth. The lobby has modern seating areas, and the staff were immediately welcoming. The highlight for our kids? A remote-controlled jeep that welcomed them at the entrance—part of the Safari Suite experience. It set the tone right away.
The hospitality for our family of 5 was outstanding. Staff were flexible about bedding arrangements, and the suites gave us enough room that we weren’t tripping over each other.
Pros for families:
- Quick, helpful check-in process
- Suites have enough space for 5 people (with a few for even larger families or groups)
- Our boys loved the themed rooms
- Central location means less driving/Grab rides
Keep in Mind:
There is no restaurant on site. There are plenty of local restaurant options a short walk away (less than 2 minutes) and the Panganin shopping center with a food court in about 5 minutes’ walk. The Granite Luxury Hotel provides a complimentary morning shuttle to 6 of the most popular locations in the city for getting breakfast or sightseeing. Book the shuttle the evening before so you have enough seats at your shuttle time for your entire family.
Night 1: Safari Suite (kid-focused fun)
The fun Safari Suite is designed for families with younger kids who have energy to burn. The layout includes an elevated bed platform, some seating, and the main attraction: a ball pit built into the room, plus a crawl space that wraps around parts of the suite.

We thought it might be a bit young for our boys (16, 14, and 12), but our boys spent the first hour in the ball pit and exploring the crawl tunnel. For kids who were sitting for most of our travel day on the train from Ipoh to Butterworth, then the ferry to Penang Island, this was exactly what they needed. The crawl space gave them a place to climb and move.

Night 2: Diva Suite (pampered, themed stay)
View this post on Instagram
The Diva Suite felt like stepping into a completely different hotel. Where the Safari Suite was playful and kid-focused, the Diva Suite was all about feeling pampered. Think mirrors, mood lighting, and fully customized details designed to spoil guests.
Every small touch in this suite was intentional. The amenities were geared toward relaxation—fluffy bathrobes, premium toiletries, designer touches throughout. It’s the kind of room where you actually want to spend time inside rather than just sleep.
For our family of 5, the sleeping setup worked well. The Diva Suite at 732 square feet (according to the hotel) gave us enough space, though it clearly wasn’t designed with three boys in mind. It worked, but parents traveling for a special celebration or girls’ getaway escape would love this.
This suite also had two bathrooms, which would be perfect for a group of girls getting ready for a wedding or an evening on the town.

Other room & suite options (beyond the themes)
While the Safari and Diva Suites get attention, most of the granite luxury hotel comprises non-themed rooms and suites. Short on ball-pits and pink wallpaper, but not short on art deco finishes, luxury linens, and some of the friendliest staff we’ve ever experienced at a hotel.
Main room categories:
- Premium rooms: Premium Twin, Premium Plus King—these are the standard hotel rooms with all the essentials
- Classic suites: Classic, Serene, Baroque, Splendour—more space than standard rooms with separate living areas
- Family options: Razzle Two-Bedroom Suite for larger families needing space
- Deluxe Suite: Good middle-ground option with extra space
- Romantic Darling Suite: Another themed option for couples – perfect for a honeymoon or getaway
- Lavish Presidential Suite: The biggest option at 1,690 square feet with 1 king and 1 queen bed, a private karaoke room, and dining space for 12
Check out all of the specifics of each Granite Luxury Hotel room type and availability.
Many suites include a separate living area with a sofa bed, dining table, and basic kitchenette setup. For families doing longer stays, having a microwave and coffee-making facilities made it easier to relax in the room than having to leave for amenities.
A quick “Would it be possible?” and we were able to get a tour of the Presidential Suite and Honeymoon (Darling) Suite:
What families should know:
- Interconnecting rooms available for families who want two connected but separate spaces
- Rooms include WiFi, aircon, flat screen televisions, work desk
- Remote-working parents or homeschooling families can actually get work done here
Facilities: pool, parking & on-site services
The Mirage Pool Deck is the standout facility. The infinity-style pool offers awe-inspiring views over George Town city and facing the KOMTAR Tower. The glass platform section—where you’re essentially swimming over a see-through floor looking down to the street—is a novel experience. Some guests love it; while others (like me, Adam) looked from the edge of the pool.
The pool is open until 10 pm daily. Depth is manageable for older kids who can swim. Loungers are available, and there’s some shade, though it can feel crowded at peak times, but there is plenty of seating on the deck.

Automated parking:
The car park uses an automated system where you drive in, hand over your vehicle, and it’s moved into vertical storage. It’s efficient and saves the hassle of parking in tight George Town streets. The system requires following staff instructions carefully—there are substantial height restrictions, so check if you’re in a larger vehicle.
Facilities at The Granite Luxury Hotel Penang:
- Fitness center: Basic equipment for maintaining your daily exercise routine amid all the Penang street food
- Lobby seating: Clean, modern, good for waiting or quick meetings
- Meeting rooms: Available for business meetings if you’re mixing work and travel
- Room service (Suites offer a pillow menu that our boys thought was the height of luxury).
Key facilities families will actually use:
- Swimming pool and shallow children’s pool section
- Free water refill stations on every floor (bring reusable bottles)
- 24-hour front desk for late arrivals or questions
- Luggage storage for early arrivals or late departures
- Laundry and dry cleaning services
Awards & recognition
The hotel has collected several recognitions:
- Asia Pacific Property Awards: Best Leisure Development, Best New Hotel Design & Architecture
- Malaysia Book of Records: Highest Cantilevered Acrylic Bottom Swimming Pool
- Malaysia Book of Records: Tallest Automated Hotel Car Park
Awards are nice validation, but we base our review on what it’s actually like to stay here as real guests with three kids. The recognitions suggest the hotel is doing something right with design and facilities, which matched our experience.
Location: in the heart of George Town
The Granite Luxury Hotel Penang sits in central George Town, making it a great location for first-time visitors to Penang Island who want to explore on foot.
We walked easily to street food, Armenian Street for the famous murals, and The Top Penang, where the Rainbow Skywalk sits. The hotel is also within walking distance of the main bus station, which would make day trips to Penang Hill and other parts of the island straightforward without needing a car.
Walking distances from the hotel:
- KOMTAR Tower and shopping malls: 5-minute walk
- Penang Times Square: 5-minute walk
- 1st Avenue Mall, Prangin Mall: 5-10 minutes
- Armenian Street murals: 10-15 minutes
- Little India: 5-10 minutes
- Food courts: 10 minutes
- Main bus station: 5 minutes
Nearby conveniences for families:
- Multiple shopping malls for rainy day activities
- Local restaurants and hawker stalls for budget meals
- Convenience stores for snacks and essentials
- Pharmacies within walking distance
- Boutique stores in the historic area
The outdoor hawker dining area at the Jetty has live bands most evenings —a fun bonus if you’re looking for casual evening entertainment, and a relaxing evening walk to and from the hotel.
Getting to and from the hotel
From Penang International Airport, the hotel is about 20km away. A Grab ride takes roughly 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic, and costs approximately MYR 30-50 ($10-15 USD).
If you’re coming overland from Butterworth via the Penang Bridge, the hotel is accessible once you reach George Town (we took the ferry which was a few minutes walk from the train station). The automated parking and secured covered self-parking (MYR 50/day) work well for rental cars or road-tripping families.
How we got around during our stay:
- Walking: Most attractions were within walking distance
- Grab: Used for trips to Lovers’ Lane and after a long day of walking
- Buses: The nearby bus station made public transport easy
For families with kids, walking worked best for us in the George Town city center. Grab rides were affordable for longer distances, and bus services are frequent and available (but don’t necessarily count on the accuracy of the schedule).
What worked for us and what to consider when staying at The Granite Luxury Hotel Penang
What worked well for us:
- Central location with walkability to attractions, restaurants, and shopping malls
- Fun Safari Suite kept kids entertained and burning energy
- Diva Suite felt like a genuine treat for Celine
- Infinity pool with city views was a highlight for everyone
- Suites offered more space than typical hotel rooms
- Friendly staff accommodated our family of 5 with a smile
- Interconnecting rooms available for families wanting privacy between parents and kids
- Coffee-making facilities and a basic kitchenette made snacks and morning coffee more convenient.
What to consider:
- Themed suites cost more than standard rooms and the novelty may wear off after a night or two, so pick a suite for one night of your stay and then stay in a luxury room for the remainder
- The glass platform at the pool may bother those with a fear of heights (but only one section of the pool is glass bottom), so enjoy the infinity pool views, especially at sunset!
These are our experiences as a family of 5. Your mileage may vary depending on your kids’ ages, your travel style, and what matters most to your trip.
