There is a good chance that if you have been to Hawaii, you have visited the island of Oahu, and while you might think of beaches and resorts, there are plenty of things to do with kids on Oahu.

Oahu is the most populous and second most densely populated of the Hawaiian Islands. It has a population of approximately 996,000 residents, and it definitely feels like every one of those people is on the road at any given time in traffic (obviously compounded with tourism).

Since Honolulu is the most traveled airport in Hawaii (and a common stopover between the Americas and Australia) you’ll probably be in Oahu at least on a layover, and if you’re lucky, even longer than that. If you’re visiting somewhere else with a layover in Honolulu, take a day or two to adjust to the time zone changes and experience the amazing island of Oahu.

Learn About Oahu Before Your Family Vacation

Before you embark on your family trip to Oahu, familiarize yourself with this captivating island and all that it has to offer. We only had a couple of days to prepare for our trip to Oahu because there was a last-minute housesitting opportunity through Trusted Housesitters that became available to us. We knew that once we arrived on Oahu, we would fall in love with the island immediately, and housesitting in Hawaii was an incredible way to visit. (If you’d like to save money on accommodation in Hawaii, consider joining Trusted Housesitters with this 25% off discount code and care for a pet while you’re there!)

The view of Oahu from the airplane as we started our descent was breathtaking! We were immediately in awe of its natural beauty, vivid green and mountainous landscape, and vibrant, blue water.

Oahu Landscape

We loved the unique landscape on Oahu

We were excited to experience the history of the island, and were specifically looking forward to visiting the site of Pearl Harbor, where the 1941 attack drew the US into World War II.

Pearl harbor memorial

Besides learning the history and experiencing the culture, we looked forward to visiting some of the diverse beaches – from beaches with white sandy beaches and huge waves that are best for surfing to rocky coves where we could do some snorkelling. Knowing what Oahu has to offer will help you plan a trip that caters to everyone’s interests, making for a memorable family vacation like ours was.

Waikiki Adventures for Families

Waikiki is a vibrant hub of activity, perfect for adventurous families who are coming to relax on the beach and enjoy the city.

Highlights include:

  • Waikiki Beach with gentle waves, ideal for young children and safe for swimming and playing
  • Kid-friendly activities such as the Honolulu Zoo and family surf lessons
  • Hawaiian cultural experiences like luaus and shows that captivate the whole family – our family’s favorite in Waikiki was ‘Rock A Hula.’

We spotted families on the beach paddleboarding and boogieboarding in kid-friendly spots on the beaches in downtown Honolulu. Building sandcastles, visiting the Waikiki Aquarium to see rare Pacific sea creatures, or experiencing a wild dolphin and turtle encounter tour are just a few more of the activities Waikiki offers.

Rock-A-Hula Waikiki

For a taste of Hawaiian musical history, the Rock-A-Hula show in Waikiki is a must-see. This family-friendly performance features:

  • Tributes to Elvis and Michael Jackson
  • Traditional drumming
  • Hula dancing
  • Fire juggling
  • Non-stop music from a live band

Live bands and video effects make this multimedia presentation an immersive fun experience for both kids and adults. It’s a fantastic way to end a day after hours on the beach with so much fun and a splash of entertainment and culture. It’s also in a beautiful, air-conditioned indoor theater. So, if you’re looking for a way to get out of the heat or looking for something to do on a rainy evening, it’s a great option.

Our boys loved Rock-A-Hula so much that they’ve already asked if we could plan to go back to watch the show again on our next layover in Honolulu. Read our Rock-A-Hula review.

Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach serves as the heart of family fun in Waikiki, Oahu. Known for its gentle waves and warm water year-round, it’s a perfect spot for young kids to enjoy the ocean safely. The beach sand is so soft and perfect for building sandcastles, shallow water is great for young swimmers, and while you walk along the beach, you can enjoy the stunning views of Waikiki and Diamond Head.

Strolling on Waikiki beach with Diamond Head in the background

There are nearly constant waves in Waikiki, so it’s a great beach for surfing and wading, or enjoying the sand, but not ideal for snorkeling.

While we stayed in Waikiki for one night, our family enjoyed walking on the beach’s soft sand and exploring the shops nearby. After our feet got all sandy at the beach, we found convenient foot showers near the restrooms to wash off the sand before walking the main road filled with shops.

Whether you plan to relax on the sand, go for a walk, or take a dip, Waikiki Beach is a must-visit for any family vacationing on Oahu, so be sure to add it to your bucket list.

On Friday nights between 7:45 pm and 8 pm, the Hilton on Waikiki Beach sets off fireworks. You can watch them from the beach at Waikiki, or if you’d like to get away from the crowds, find a spot on Magic Island, part of the peninsula on the Ala Moana Beach park. There are still plenty of people who watch from this area, but there’s much more parking here than near Waikiki beach, and less crowded from people who are staying at the resorts.

Serene lakes and diverse plant life at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden are also enjoyable for families. These nature spots offer a chance to experience Oahu at your own pace, away from the hustle and bustle.

A flat hike alongside the ocean on the Kaena Point Trail or sunset views at Tantalus Lookout offer incredible views as well.

These memorable hikes provide a fun and educational experience, immersing families in the island’s natural beauty. And don’t forget to plan a morning visit to Diamond Head, for the iconic views next to the ocean – just be prepared that there will be a lot of stairs on this hike.

Manoa Falls

The hike to view Manoa Falls, a 150-foot waterfall, is a breathtaking journey through a lush rainforest, perfect for families with older kids.

  • The trail takes about two hours to complete.
  • Good traction shoes are required due to moderate difficulty and potentially slippery paths.
  • The reward at the end is a stunning waterfall, making the effort worthwhile.

Held on-site at Wet ‘n Wild Park a short drive north from Honolulu, Chief’s Luau offers an evening of cultural immersion and entertainment. A delicious, ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffet features traditional Hawaiian dishes like BBQ pulled pork and fresh coconut. Note that the luau tickets are sold separately from Wet N Wild tickets, so be sure to book your Chief’s Luau Tickets!

The luau showcases the diverse cultures of Polynesia through dances and performances from regions like Fiji, New Zealand, Tonga, and Hawaii. Our family enjoyed a full evening of fun and culture as we experienced our first Hawaiian luau. We highly recommend it if your family is looking to experience a luau while in Hawaii.

Pearl Harbor National Memorial

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial provides a poignant and educational experience for families and should not be missed. The memorial helps visitors remember and learn from the significant World War II attack. With over a million visitors each year, it’s clear that this site holds great historical significance. Besides the museum, you can book a tour boat shuttle out to the USS Arizona Memorial site.

Discussing the attack with kids beforehand provides helpful context for what they will see.

Remember to follow the no-bag policy and carry only essentials. There are lockers available if you don’t have the option to leave bags in a vehicle. And book the tour to the USS Arizona Memorial online ahead of time to ensure you get access to that tour during your visit.

Iolani Palace is a unique historical site, being the only palace in the US with electricity, indoor plumbing, and a working telephone before the White House. Visitors have the option to choose between guided tours and self-led tours. Each type of tour lasts between 60 to 90 minutes.

Exploring the palace offers a fascinating glimpse into Hawaii’s royal past, enriching the family experience. Tip: If you don’t have a lot of time to tour inside the palace, you can also simply drive by it to see how beautiful it is from the outside.

Thrilling Adventures and Activities

These adventures provide adrenaline-pumping fun that both kids and adults will enjoy, making for a memorable family trip. Activities like the Manoa Falls hike or a boat ride amplify the thrill, letting families experience Oahu’s natural beauty in exhilarating ways. We hope that you will get to experience some of these adventures and create unforgettable memories together as a family.

Wet ‘n Wild Hawaii

Wet n Wild Hawaii is a water park that promises a full day of fun for the entire family. It’s the only waterpark in all of Hawaii! With shuttles from most popular hotel locations and ample parking, it’s easily accessible. Consider getting a season’s pass if you plan to visit the waterpark multiple times. You will also save money on parking since it’s free with a pass.

The park boasts a variety of rides, from high-thrill options like the Volcanic Wedgee to more relaxed experiences like the lazy river. Food options on-site allow families to enjoy the water attractions all day without needing to leave. Our day at Wet ‘n Wild was a highlight for our family during our visit to Oahu, and we highly recommend it! One of our favorite attractions was ‘Da Flowrider’.

This is not walking distance from Waikiki (about 25 miles west) so plan a shuttle or to catch the public bus. There’s plenty to keep you busy all day long, and book tickets for the Chief’s Luau to make a full day of your trip to Kapolei.

Shark’s Cove (North Shore)

Shark’s Cove on the North Shore, known for its underwater rock formations and vibrant marine life, is a fantastic snorkeling spot (Our favorite beach snorkeling on Oahu – you won’t get much better than this without taking a boat out to the reef.)

Recommended for older kids due to the rocky underwater terrain, the experience of seeing tropical fish and turtles makes it worth the visit.

With snorkel gear in hand, we explored the cove and created unforgettable underwater memories. One of the most memorable moments was discovering sea turtles. We floated on the water for 10 minutes while respecting their space to see how they interacted with the underwater world at Shark’s Cove.

The North Shore is a great spot to visit if you are looking for a day trip away from Waikiki. Plan to rent a car or take a tour shuttle if you’re staying in Waikiki. If you are driving yourself, plan extra time to find parking, as it can be a challenge along the popular north shore. Start your North Shore visit by stopping at Ted’s Bakery to grab a snack while you’re finding parking and getting settled in Shark’s Cove. Their chocolate coconut cream pie is their most popular treat.

Dole Pineapple Plantation

The Dole Pineapple Plantation offers a mix of fun and learning. The main attraction is the Pineapple Express train ride, which takes visitors on a 20-minute journey through the plantation.

Navigating the world’s largest maze and exploring a garden tour filled with exotic fruits and flowers will delight kids. The plantation also serves the famous Dole Whip, a treat that we could not pass up. It was delicious, and served with chunks of real pineapple.

We enjoyed exploring the large store, full of souvenirs and locally made products as well.

Practical Tips for Visiting Oahu with Kids

Visiting Oahu with kids can be a delightful experience with the right preparation. Waikiki has a vibrant atmosphere and is welcoming to families. Oahu is highly regarded as a family-friendly destination, offering enjoyable experiences for all ages across various locations. Here are some tips for families:

  • Make early reservations for popular attractions, such as Pearl Harbor and the USS Memorial.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for hiking and exploring.
  • Use strollers and wagons at Pearl Harbor, as they are permitted and make it easier for families with young children to explore all of this memorial.

Plan ahead for safe beach experiences by checking weather conditions and choosing the top beach picks suitable for swimming, unless you prefer the waves for surfing. Packing essentials like sun protection, comfortable hiking shoes, and your own snacks and drinks can significantly enhance the comfort of your family vacation.

While you visit and explore the island of Oahu, you will have no trouble finding a variety of engaging activities that will keep your family entertained as well as educate you about the history and culture.

Packing Essentials

The key here is not to overpack. You will probably spend a lot of your time on the island in a swimsuit while lying on the beach or lounging by a pool, so be sure to pack light by bringing just a few days’ worth of clothes. However, don’t forget the essentials so that your family has a comfortable vacation.

A few items you might want to have could be sandals, as well as running shoes, and travel water bottles to ensure a smooth trip. Don’t forget to pack snorkel gear if you plan to explore Oahu’s underwater wonders. And if you accidentally forget something for your trip, you’ll find plenty of shops that sell beach essentials.

Pack reef-safe sunscreen to protect against the Hawaiian sun, hats, and comfortable shoes are a must for all the walking and hiking you’ll do. If you book a hotel that doesn’t allow you to take their towels to the beach, you can purchase souvenir beach towels while on Oahu.

Choosing Accommodations

Choosing the right accommodations for your family trip to Oahu is important. Family-friendly resorts with amenities like pools, kitchenettes, and beach access are ideal for families. However, there are lots of hotel options one or two blocks away from the beach that can help you save money if you are looking for budget-friendly options.

Our family used travel rewards points to stay at OHIA Wikiki Studios, which had space in one room for a family of 5 with a kitchenette, a balcony, and was walking distance from the shops and beach. Wherever you choose to stay, book your accommodations in advance to secure more affordable rates, especially during peak travel seasons.

For the other portion of our visit, we were housesitting in Hawaii (both on Oahu and the Big Island)

Look for places that offer fun things activities and pools to keep the kids entertained.

Transportation Tips

We think that renting a car is the best way to explore Oahu with kids, providing the flexibility to visit various attractions at your own pace. If you’re staying in Waikiki, most attractions offer transportation to and from the beach area, making it convenient to get around.

Renting a car allows families to experience the island’s diverse landscapes and activities without being tied to a schedule. PLUS you’ll get to explore a bit of the island and find some great photo spots like this:
