We recently stayed at Wyndham Ion Majestic in Genting Highlands with our three boys (ages 16, 14, and 11). To say we had an amazing experience would be an understatement. It’s out of the way for the main attractions in Genting Highlands, so for some, that’s a drawback, and for others, that’s the appeal.
Quick Take From Our Family: We’d recommend spending at least one night experiencing the Wyndham Ion Majestic hotel as a destination during your trip to Genting Highlands (even if activities, shopping, casino, and theme parks are on your list and you want to stay more accessible to them the rest of your visit

Enjoying our 44th floor balcony from the Wyndham Ion Majestic Hotel, Genting Highlands
Wyndham Ion Majestic offers 850 spacious guest rooms and suites, many with balconies and mountain views. It also has one of the best breakfast buffets we’ve ever experienced, and being the highest hotel in Malaysia makes the rooftop access even more memorable.

There were so many choices, we didn’t know where to start (or when to end!)
Is Wyndham Ion Majestic good for families? Here’s a quick overview:
The Wyndham Ion Majestic Hotel opened in 2024 and sits at around 1,800 meters above sea level in Genting Highlands. It’s a 5-star property with 850 rooms and suites spread across a 50-story tower. The hotel is officially recognized as Malaysia’s highest altitude hotel, which sounds impressive—and honestly, you feel it when you’re standing on your balcony watching clouds roll through the valley below.

A quick overview of Genting Highlands so you know where you’ll be staying:
There are mulitple levels of developement through the mountains and each level is a higher elevation.
- Level 1 is the Genting Premium Outlet Mall. This is where the bus from the city stops.
- Level 2 is “Genting Highlands” the official small town in the area with a few residences, hotels, restaurants, markets, and grocery and convenience stores.
- Level 3 is Chin Swee Temple – a tourist stop with a few restaurants and snack spots, but no hotels
- Level 4 Genting Skyworld theme park (along with multiple associated hotels, Sky Avenue Mall bordering the theme park, Skytropolis Indoor Theme park inside the mall, and a Casino)
- The Wyndham Ion Majestic Hotel at the top (Level 5)
Each level requires transportation to travel between. Walking isn’t an option. (Google suggests you can walk from Wyndham Ion Majestic to Genting SkyWorld in an hour. We didn’t see a sidewalk or footpath, so it seems like you would have to walk along the road, either downhill to Skyworld or uphill to the hotel)
The main things our kids loved about this Wyndham at Genting:
- The heated pool and infinity pool were a relaxing place to spend the afternoon (finished off with some time in the steam room and sauna)
- The mountain views from our suite were genuinely stunning
- The three-bedroom suite provided our family with ample space.
- The breakfast buffet at Ambrosia gave us plenty to choose from for those of us wanting to try local dishes to some of us who wanted something more recognizable.
- Having multiple dining options on-site (including Majestic Pizza, Stonepot Restaurant, Cloof Lounge & Hard Rock Cafe) made evenings easier.

The main things to consider: the hotel is not walking distance to Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park or the main malls, but Grab or shuttle buses are readily available. If you’re planning an extended stay in Genting and want to be away from the hustle and bustle of the theme parks and mall, then Wyndham Ion Majestic is not just a functional hotel near the attractions, but a destination.
Plan to spend at least a couple of days at Wyndham Ion Majestic, enjoying the hotel and the mountain views. Don’t fill your whole schedule with rushing from one Genting Highlands attraction to another.
Key facts about Wyndham Ion Majestic Genting Highlands
The hotel opened in 2024, making it one of the newest properties in Genting. This 5-star hotel has 850 rooms, including studios, family rooms, and multi-bedroom suites.
The tower rises 50 floors, with hotel guests staying on upper floors (we stayed in a 3-bedroom suite on the 44th floor) and signature dining and entertainment near the top. The Hard Rock Cafe sits on the 50th floor, making it one of the highest Hard Rock locations in Asia Pacific. There’s also a stone pot restaurant and rooftop attractions at the top levels.
Wyndham Ion Majestic is located in the Genting Highlands, within the Titiwangsa mountain range. It’s a short Grab ride from SkyAvenue mall, First World Plaza, and Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park—but not within walking distance. At this altitude, temperatures are noticeably cooler than in Kuala Lumpur, often around 15-22°C, which can be a welcome break from KL’s humidity (especially for us Canadians not used to the never-ending humidity).
The hotel has plenty of family-friendly amenities, including an indoor splash pad with water slides just for kids, a games room with life-sized chess, books, toys, and puzzles, and a theatre room. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, including in rooms and public areas (which is great because the cell signal was nearly non-existent), and the hotel maintains a non-smoking policy in all rooms and common areas.

Lifesize chess? I (Adam) won – just for the record.
Our three-bedroom suite: space, layout, and views
With three boys (16, 14, and 11), we specifically booked a three-bedroom suite to avoid the cramped sleeping arrangements that come with trying to fit five people into a standard twin room or family room. It was worth it.

This was our bedroom view facing the mountains
Suites are approximately 750-800 square feet and includes three separate bedrooms, a shared living area, and two bathrooms. Our bedroom had a Queen bed, another had a bunk bed setup that worked well for two of our boys (Single on the top, double on the bottom), and the third bedroom had a single. There was a small dining area and kitchen prep area – enough room for everyone to spread out without tripping over each other’s luggage.

There were plenty of angles to sit and enjoy the mountains
Choose your view: Mountain side or Genting Side?
When booking, you can choose between two view orientations: overlooking Genting itself (city/park views with lights and activity) or facing the surrounding mountains and ancient rainforest. We chose the mountain side, and we’d make the same choice again. The views were incredible—layers of green hills disappearing into mist, with clouds literally rolling up the valley in the mornings. Our boys spent more time on the balcony than we expected.
From the bedrooms and balcony on the mountain side, you’re looking at the picturesque landscape of the Titiwangsa range. Mornings bring cooler light and often a blanket of mist (yes, we went up to the roof for sunrise. You can access the roof for free, or purchase tickets for “Hoverland” and face East on an elevated platform with a cafe and photo spots – worth it if you’re going to get up for sunrise anyway).
It’s really peaceful, which is a strange thing to say about a hotel this close to Genting Highlands – one of Malaysia’s biggest entertainment areas.
Practical details for a family room at Wyndham Ion Majestic:
- The air conditioning worked well, though you won’t need it cranked high given the naturally cool climate. We used it during the day to cut some humidity, but the windows were open at night.
- Blackout curtains kept rooms dark for sleeping,
- Noise between rooms was minimal—we could hear each other if someone was being loud, but normal conversation didn’t travel.
- Elevators serving the higher floors moved quickly, which matters when you’re staying on floor 44.
- In-room basics included a mini-fridge and a kettle, and Wi-Fi was reliable for the kids’ devices.
- There is no cooktop or utensils. Plan to dine at the hotel restaurants, and don’t miss the breakfast buffet at Ambrosia.
Everything still felt new, which makes sense for a hotel that opened in 2024. Modern finishes, no visible wear, and very clean throughout.
Amenities we actually used (and what we wish we had time for)
The main reason Wyndham Ion Majestic works well as a stand-alone destination is the amenity level. If you’re planning a multi-day Genting trip, you don’t have to spend every day at the theme park or the mall. The hotel itself offers enough to fill a relaxed “chill day” between park visits.
The heated pool and infinity pool were our family’s highlight. The swimming pool area features a heated outdoor pool that stays warm even when the mountain air is cool—and at 1,800 meters, the air gets genuinely cool, especially in evenings and mornings. The kids’ pool area includes a splash zone for younger guests, though our boys gravitated toward the main infinity pool with its views over the surrounding mountains. The pool depth ranges work for different ages, and we found the pool area reasonably uncrowded during our visit after check-in and the next morning.
The jacuzzi area sits surrounded by greenery, creating a slightly more relaxed vibe than the main pool deck. It fits maybe 6-8 people comfortably. It felt family-friendly during the day. Our boys don’t care much for sitting still, so the pools were a better option.
The steam room and sauna are located near the pool area within the wellness facilities. We didn’t notice posted age restrictions, but we used them with our boys (11, 14, and 16) without issue.
The fitness centre faced the mountains, which made a treadmill session more enjoyable than staring at a wall. Equipment included treadmills, bikes, cross-training machines, and free weights. It wasn’t crowded during the morning when we visited.
We saw but didn’t fully use the theatre room and games room (though we did play one game of chess) — we simply ran out of time. Both looked well-maintained and easily accessible. If we stayed again, we’d block out time specifically for these, especially for the teens. There are also kids’ play areas that appear suited for younger children.
On-site dining: breakfast buffet, Hard Rock Cafe & more
Food on-site is a big factor for families who don’t want to shuttle out for every meal, and Wyndham Ion Majestic offers several options that kept us fed without constant trips to the main Genting area. We stayed just 1 night (due to our schedule) but enjoyed drinks on arrival at the Hard Rock Cafe (with amazing views from the 50th floor), a pizza dinner at Majestic Pizza the evening we arrived, and an overwhelming breakfast buffet the next morning at Ambrosia.
Breakfast buffet
The breakfast buffet was a highlight for us. It’s served at the Ambrosia restaurant on Level 12, typically running from around 6:30 am to 10:30 am (check current times during your stay). During peak hours around 8-9 am, it got busy but not overwhelmingly so—we found seating without having to wait for a table. (We had been up at Hoverland on the roof for sunrise, so it was around 8am when we went for breakfast).
Specific items we saw and tried: fresh fruit (watermelon, papaya, pineapple), pastries and bread, good coffee, masala tea that our family loved, an omelette station where cooks prepared eggs to order, sausages, fried eggs, yogurt with various toppings, and fresh-squeezed juice. There were also local Malaysian dishes to try – rice, chicken, noodles, and all kinds of sauces and toppings.

Enjoying the view of the pastries (and also the mountains)
From a parent’s perspective, there were enough simple options for picky eaters (eggs, toast, fruit), solid protein options for hungry teens (eggs, sausages), and enough variety that you wouldn’t get bored over multiple days. As a family of five, we found it worthwhile to have included in our package rate. Our youngest asked if we could stay a few more days specifically for the breakfast!
Hard Rock Cafe
The Hard Rock Cafe on-site sits on the 50th floor with mountain views, making it genuinely unique. Live music plays most evenings on a stage in a room that contains an inground (in floor?) pool and seating around the outside.
The menu is standard Hard Rock fare (burgers, ribs, American-style comfort food), and they carry exclusive merchandise you won’t find elsewhere. It works well for families with older kids and teens. For younger children, the later evening music might be more than they need. A quick note that this pool is 18+ so let you kids know ahead of visiting so they’re not anticipating a swim.

Don’t miss live music at the Hark Rock. Wear your swimsuit and enjoy the heated pool in front of the stage
Other dining options
Majestic Pizza served great thin-crust pizza with a variety of topping options. Pricing was comparable to Genting Mall options, and the convenience of grabbing something familiar for dinner was great. They have a pizza oven, so the pizza tasted fresh and authentic. We considered taking it back to the room, but decided to eat in the restaurant area.

Pizza was fresh and delicious
The stone pot restaurant (Souper Hot) on the 50th floor specializes in Yunnan-style hotpot with premium mushrooms and slow-brewed broths. The views are excellent, and the cuisine is distinctive—it felt slightly more adult-oriented but would work for families with adventurous eaters.
The lounge cafe (Cloof) worked well for coffee, quick snacks, and a place to sit with wifi while the kids rested in the room. Seating was comfortable and wifi reliable.
Having these on-site options meant we ate about half our meals at the hotel versus heading to SkyAvenue or World Plaza.
Location, transport & getting to the theme parks in Genting Highlands
Wyndham Ion Majestic sits in an elevated area in the mountains relative to all the main attractions in Genting. The hotel is not walking distance to Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park, SkyAvenue mall, or the main casino area.
We used Grab for all our trips to the main Genting area. Calling a Grab from the hotel entrance was straightforward—typical wait times during our stay were 5-10 minutes. One-way fares for our famiyl of 5 ran approximately MYR 20-30 ($8-$10 USD) depending on exact destination and demand. Travel time to SkyWorlds or the mall area was roughly 10-15 minutes by car.
The hotel offers shuttle service, including hourly service. We saw shuttles mentioned, but primarily used Grab for flexibility on timing. We wouldn’t have saved much on a shuttle once we bought 5 tickets, but for a couple or smaller family, it could be a good option.
If shuttle schedules fit your plans, the shuttle bus option could save on transportation costs—worth asking at the front desk when you arrive.
Even though our schedule allowed only one night, the hotel would work well as a “base camp” approach: a busy theme park day, then a quiet day using hotel amenities, then another park day. This would balance the kids’ energy and give you some downtime.
How do you get to Wyndham Ion Majestic from Kuala Lumpur?
The most direct, but most expensive way to get to Wyndham Ion Majestic Hotel, Genting Highlands
Take a Grab from KL to Wyndham Ion Majestic. This will be most direct, and will cost between 300-400RM (about $80-$150 USD)
The adventurous (and less expensive) way
- Take a grab from wherever you are in KL to KL Sentral (Grab prices depend on time of day, demand, and distance)
- Take the bus from KL to Genting Highlands Premium Outlet (About 25RM per person, or $10 USD, and often includes a skyway ticket; we booked with 12go.asia). If you’re not planning to take the cable car in the highlands, you can book a ticket for about half that doesn’t include the cable car.
- Take the Awana Skyway cable car past the Chin Swee Temple up to Sky Mall (or take a free shuttle from the Genting Premium Outlets to the Sky Mall if you’re not a fan of the cable car experience)
- Take a Grab from Sky Avenue Mall to Wyndham Ion Majestic
At any point in the process, you can just get a Grab car to take you to the hotel (if the shuttle is full or you change your mind on the cable car at the Genting Premium Outlets, for example.
Hoverland rooftop experience & Hard Rock on the 50th floor
While it’s the highest elevation hotel in Malaysia, it’s also a bit of magic to get to be on the top floor of the highest hotel in Malaysia. Between the Hard Rock cafe and Hoverland on the roof, the top of the Wynham Ion Majestic is its own destination.

There are “lookout” windows in both sides of the Hard Rock Cafe on the 50th floor
Having a Hard Rock Cafe on the 50th floor of a tower in the Titiwangsa mountains creates something you don’t see elsewhere in the region. The Hard Rock brand brings entertainment, live music, and a distinctive vibe to what’s already positioned as a renowned holiday destination.
Hoverland is located on the roof of Wyndham Ion Majestic and offers rooftop activities and photo spots. It’s essentially an adventure platform at the top of the building with views in every direction.
Our family (at least some of us – I, Adam, had to run the camera…) did the Hangout Walk at Hoverland. The activity involves walking outside in harnesses along elevated platforms with significant drops below. It lasted roughly 30-45 minutes, including safety briefings and the actual walk. Our boys all loved it—the combination of height, views, and controlled adrenaline hit the right notes.
Check in at the hoverland desk in the lobby, then take the elevator to the roof. There appeared to be height/age requirements posted—worth confirming current requirements before promising it to your kids. Pricing was separate from the hotel stay; check the official current rates, as they may change.
From the rooftop, you get some of the best panoramic views in Genting. On clear moments (before the periodic cloud mist rolls in), you can see across the picturesque landscape of the surrounding mountains. Good for photos, especially if you have teens who appreciate dramatic backdrops.
Family-friendliness: policies, kids’ facilities & room types
Wyndham Ion Majestic is definitely a family-friendly property.
Kid-oriented spaces we saw: the indoor pool area with a kids’ pool, a games room with age-appropriate activities, and dedicated play areas. The games room seemed suitable for tweens and younger kids. Most of the climbing activities would be for younger kids, but we enjoyed the life-size chessboard.
For room types, Wyndham Ion Majestic offers studios (approximately 377 sq ft for a king studio or a twin studio), family rooms (approximately 646 sq ft), two-bedroom units (approximately 700 sq ft), and three-bedroom suites (approximately 776 sq ft). The room size differences matter when you’re deciding between configurations.
Based on our experience, for a family of 5, we preferred a single space with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms rather than being spread across multiple rooms at other hotels.
Interesting facts to share with your family about the Wyndham Ion Majestic Hotel
- Wyndham Ion Majestic is officially recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records as Malaysia’s highest altitude hotel, sitting at approximately 1,800 meters in the Titiwangsa mountain range. The property is surrounded by ancient rainforest, which you can see from mountain-view rooms—layers of green disappearing into mist.
- With around 850 rooms and suites, it’s one of the larger standalone hotel properties in Genting Highlands. The tower reaches 50 floors.
Tips for families staying at the Wyndham Ion Majestic Hotel
- Bring a hoodie because the mountain air is cool, especially in the mornings and evenings, and you’ll want to enjoy your balcony and visit the roof for the best views. Have layers for a warmer afternoon or a trip to the theme park.
- Expect mist or fog to roll through quickly in the afternoons—morning pool time gives you clearer views, but any time of day can be clear or cloudy, and conditions can change minute by minute.
- The destination vibe is real compared with the busier casino-adjacent hotels, but you can still visit the Hard Rock Cafe for live music most evenings if you’re looking for some entertainment.
- Plan a “Destination” day at the Wyndham when you don’t leave for shopping or attractions: Get up to enjoy sunrise at Hoverland on the foor, Ambrosia for breakfast, lounge at the pool, catch a movie in the theatre room, grab pizza for lunch at Majestic Pizza, laze around the sauna and jacuzzi in the afternoon, grab a coffee at the Cloof lounge and take it back to your room for the sunset in the mountains, dinner in the stonepot restaurant on the 50th floor, and dessert at the Hard Rock for some live music.
Who Wyndham Ion Majestic is best for:
What works well
- The multi-bedroom suites offer genuine space that makes a difference for families with older kids—our three-bedroom felt like a small apartment rather than a cramped hotel room.
- The heated pool and infinity pool were highlights we’d specifically recommend; swimming in warm water while cool mountain air surrounds you is an unforgettable experience. The breakfast buffet was solid and varied enough for multiple days.
- Mountain views from the balcony were genuinely impressive—we were immediately greeted in the morning by mist-covered hills that felt far removed from urban Malaysia. Having multiple on-site dining options (Hard Rock Cafe, pizza, hotpot, cafe) meant we didn’t have to leave. The rooftop attractions added to the experience and memories of our stay.
In hindsight, we were happy with our room choice facing the mountains. If you want evening views of Sky Mall and Genting Park, Hard Rock has windows facing that direction.

We enjoyed the heated pool – just the right temperature to relax without having to limit our time
What to consider
- The hotel is not walkable to the theme park, mall, or main attractions—you’ll rely on Grab or shuttle bus rides.
- If you want to be in the center of the casino and mall action, this location is actually not convenient for that specific purpose; it’s positioned as a quieter alternative, and is worth spreading your visit to Genting Highlands across a few nights in a few locations.
Who should consider it?
Families with preteens and teenagers who want more room and quieter evenings would find this a good fit. Parents who like the idea of the hotel being a destination with its own amenities—where you can mix park days with chill days—will appreciate what Wyndham Ion Majestic offers. If you’re planning 2-3 nights in Genting to balance activity with relaxation, the mix works well.
Who might prefer staying elsewhere?
Visitors focused on late-night casino access or wanting to walk between entertainment venues would be better served by hotels connected to SkyAvenue or First World Plaza, and would still enjoy planning an evening or two of their visit at Wyndham Ion Majestic.
Our takeaway: Summarizing our stay at Wyndham Ion Majestic, Genting Highlands:
We enjoyed our stay – ok, that’s an understatement: The views exceeded expectations, the suite worked perfectly for our family of five, and we’d return to use the amenities we didn’t have time for—specifically the theatre room. When we book our next visit, we’d add an extra night or two specifically for downtime.
If you’re planning a Genting Highlands trip with your kids and want space and amenities over proximity to the casino area, Wyndham Ion Majestic offers a unique experience.
