Are you searching for things to do with kids in Ottawa on your next road trip or family vacation? We’ve visited Ottawa twice as a family while visiting relatives in the area. The first visit was on a rainy Sunday. The timing was simply an opportunity to get to Ottawa, but many tours are closed on Sundays, and outdoor activities weren’t very enjoyable in the rain.
We took our three boys to the Ottawa visitor center to learn about the city, then spent the afternoon in the Royal Canadian Mint then went to the Museum of Science and technology.
Our second visit was much better planned with a bright, sunny September day. We toured the West Block of Parliament Hill (where the House of Commons meets), saw the renovations happening on the center block, explored an immersive multimedia experience to learn about the renovations on the center block, visited the Senate Building, and grabbed some lunch at Byward market.
It was a busy day! We look forward to checking out some more museums on this list on our next visit to the City of Ottawa.

Ottawa is home to Canada’s federal government and offers the opportunity to learn about the process necessary to run the government of Canada. Recent renovations have created more opportunities for guided tours in the federal buildings.

Exploring Parliament Hill, the heart of Canada’s capital, should be at the top of your to-list. The Changing of the Guard ceremony is a must-see spectacle that highlights a key Canadian tradition, featuring a parade from Cartier Square Drill Hall to Parliament Hill daily from late June to late August.

Guided tours of the House of Commons, lasting around 40 minutes, provide insight into its history and significance. Similarly, tours of the Senate Building, taking about 30 minutes, explain the role of Canada’s Upper Chamber. The main Parliament Building, Centre Block, is under extensive renovations. This is where the Senate usually meets, so the Senate is currently meeting in the original Ottawa Train Station building. When you’re finished your senate tour, take a few moments to stop into the Chateau Laurier foyer across the street to visit one of Canada’s oldest and most iconic hotels.
