A Quick History of Todos Santos:

Todos Santos, Mexico, is located in Baja California Sur and was originally inhabited by the Guaycura and Pericú Native Americans, who valued its fertile lands. Spanish colonizers established the Jesuit mission Santa Rosa de las Palmas in 1723, which laid the foundation for the town, and its location was ideal for agriculture, particularly sugarcane farming since it is freshwater spring fed.

The town thrived in the 19th century on the sugarcane industry, reflecting a blend of colonial and local architectural styles. With the decline of the sugar industry in the 20th century, Todos Santos transformed into a cultural hub, attracting artists and tourists, and was designated a “Pueblo Mágico” for its rich cultural and historical significance.

We love the nearby views of the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra de La Laguna mountains. Todos Santos feels like a paradise where history, art, and nature converge.

We enjoyed walking the cobblestone streets of downtown Todos Santos with our three boys, looking at the colorful buildings and beautiful flowers, and we treated our kids to some delicious ice cream at a local ice cream shop. It’s nice to sit and people-watch as you take in the essence of this magical town.

Because we enjoyed our first trip to Baja so much, we spent the winter of 2024-2025 in Baja California Sur, close to Todos Santos, in our travel trailer. Whether you’re visiting from Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, or La Paz, Todos Santos is the perfect family day trip or weekend getaway while you are in Baja California Sur.

Best Time to Visit

Todos Santos has a mild climate throughout the year. The ideal months to visit are from November to April, when the weather is warm and dry, with cooler nights and little to no humidity. During this period, you can enjoy the best of what Todos Santos has to offer, from outdoor activities to cultural events.

The busiest season extends from December to April since this is when most tourists visit Todos Santos. It’s worth noting that accommodation rates may be higher during these months due to increased demand, and that can add up if you need to book multiple rooms for your family.

Most hotel rooms in Todos Santos are for two people. We found Quinta Santa Rosa is the only hotel in town that offers rooms to accommodate 5 – 6 people.

If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the spring months of March to May. While the summer months from June to September can bring high temperatures and humidity, Todos Santos remains a beautiful destination year-round.

Take a photo at the Todos Santos Sign

A visit to Todos Santos wouldn’t be complete without taking a photo at the iconic Todos Santos Sign. Located beside the Iglesia Mision Todos Santos, this colorful sign is a popular spot for tourists. Our kids enjoy climbing on or inside the huge letters as they pose for a photo.

For the best picture, visit in the morning or early evening when the sun’s angle is just right.

One of the fun things we’ve learned while RVing in Baja is that nearly every town has these letters, and they sometimes to get painted and updated with the season or events. The picture above is from our visit in 2025 and below in 2023. Looks like Todos Santos keeps their sign the same (or at least both February visits were the same!)

Sea turtle release at dusk at Tortugueros Las Playitas

One of the most magical experiences in Todos Santos is the baby sea turtle release at dusk, organized by Tortugueros Las Playitas. During the nesting season, visitors can line up to watch and protect the baby turtles as they make their journey from the beach to the sea. Although you can’t touch the turtles, being there to witness their first steps into the ocean is an unforgettable experience.

The turtle release is a daily event in season and is free, although the organization collects optional donations from visitors. Hatchlings are released as soon as they emerge from their nests, ensuring they begin their journey to the sea right away.

Nest cleaning takes place at 4:00 PM daily to help any struggling hatchlings, preparing them for a release at dusk. During peak nesting season, it’s common to have hatchling releases every evening at sunset. This activity was a highlight for our family.
