Consider a trip to Niagara Falls with kids? We were just there with our kids and another family. The kids all enjoyed the day trip. Here’s the story:
Last week, while visiting our parents in Ontario, Canada, we had friends fly in for vacation. They have 3 kids, so with our 3 boys, we were a group of 4 adults and 6 kids. We didn’t go to the American side since we’re already in Canada, and the Canadian side has the best view of the falls.
Is It Better to see Niagara Falls from the Canadian or US side?
Niagara Falls is made up of 3 sections: The horseshoe falls which is on the border of US and Canada (which you probably think of first when you think of Niagara Falls) The American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls. The American and Bridal Veil Falls are entirely on the American side of the falls, so from the American side, you can look across the top of the falls, but from the Canadian side, you can get a view facing the falls.

Take your family to visit Niagara Falls for this view from the Canadian side
For Canada, Niagara Falls is a significant part of our tourism economy, (probably comparable to the Canadian Rockie Mountains) so aside from the falls themselves, there are plenty of restaurants, activities, casinos, museums, and tourist traps to keep you occupied for your visit.
Here is the itinerary for our family day trip to Niagara Falls:
- We arrived around 4 pm (All-day parking was $35 – summer 2024). We knew we wanted to stay for the 10 pm fireworks (Every night May to October) and avoid the hottest part of the day in August – it turned out it wasn’t a hot day at all, but we planned ahead this way just in case.
- Journey Behind the Falls tour (about an hour)
- Walked along the falls for pictures, selfies, etc.
- Dinner at the Rainforest Cafe (our boys’ favorite tourist trap restaurant) around 6:30 pm
- Walked Clifton Hill (the tourist area of Niagara Falls built on a hill – think a tightly-packed version of Gatlinburg or Wisconsin Dells)
- Walked down to see the falls lit up at night
- Fireworks over the falls at 10 pm (from May to October)
- Heading home at 10:15 pm
We’ll let you decide which is the better view of the falls, and since you’ll be visiting the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, here are some of the best things to consider doing while there!

Journey Behind The Falls OR Hornblower / Maid of the Mist Boat?

The “Maid of the Mist” used to be the name of the boat that drives into the whirlpool from the Canadian side, but now the US side uses the name Maid of the Mist, and the Canadian side calls their boat the Hornblower.
We’ve done both the boat into the falls and the journey behind the falls. From now on, we’ll take guests behind the falls and skip the boat. The boat is very windy from the impact of the water, and there’s plenty of mist spray around. It’s a unique experience, but it is uncomfortable, and having now gone behind the falls, we much prefer this experience where you can get closer to the falls, but control the duration and the intensity of the experience.
